Product Information:

Goldenseal - Latin name: Hydrastis canadensis, Other names: Eye Balm, Ground Raspberry, Indian Paint, Jaundice Root, Yellow Root. A remedy for although not officially recognized as effective, Goldenseal is a popular remedy for canker sores, sore throat, and upper respiratory infections..

It also has a long-standing history as a remedy for urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, and infectious diarrhea and has also been used for indigestion and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), although its effectiveness for these ailments has never been scientifically verified. Applied externally, it is used to treat wounds and skin and eye infections.

What It Is; Why It Works
Certain compounds in Goldenseal--particularly one called berberine--have antibiotic properties, attacking a variety of common germs. Researchers have found that it's particularly effective against the bacteria and parasites responsible for infectious diarrhea.

Goldenseal was introduced to the West by Native Americans, who used the root as a medicine and as a yellow stain for the face and clothing. Much of the plant's original habitat in the eastern U.S. has become the victim of deforestation. It is now cultivated in the Pacific Northwest.

The plant is a small herbaceous perennial that reaches a height of no more than a foot and produces small flowers and raspberry-like, inedible fruit. The plant has a bitter taste and a strong, disagreeable odor. Only the fleshy underground stem and roots are used medicinally.
