MECHANISM OF ACTION - Resistance + strengthens the immune systems response of the two major categories: nonspecific and specific. Nonspecific resistance refers to all of the body defenses used to protect against "all kinds" of foreign invaders. Nonspecific resistance does not depend upon specific recognition of the foreign body although a differentiation is made between "self and not self," typical response factors of nonspecific resistance include the skin, mucous membranes, phagocytosis, inflammation, fever, and antimicrobial substances (not antibodies).

Resistance + increases the nonspecific resistance promotion of phagocytosis including granulocytic macrophage activity and agranulocytic macrophage activity. Specific resistance differs from nonspecific resistance in that it is designed to attack specific micro-organisms or foreign proteins. It is composed of two parts: "The cell-mediated immune system" and the "humoral immune system." Resistance + enhances the promotion of the specially sensitized lymphocytes called T-cells, which in the cell-mediated immune system are responsible for the defense against viruses, fungi, protozoans, helminths, transplanted tissue, and cancer cells. The humoral immune system is also aided in the production of antibodies by B-cells, which defend against bacteria and viruses (antigens) in body fluids.

Bio-flavonoids, a biologically active principle involved in every major metabolic process in the human organism are abundant in Propolis. ELEUTHEROCOCCUS senticosus, is a member of the family Araliaceae and is known in the western world as Siberian or Manchurian ginseng. It is not purported to have curative effects on the body, but rather, restorative effects. This herb has the power to increase resistance to various adverse influences of a physical, chemical, biological, and psychological nature and to reduce the negative anatomical and biochemical effects that stress produces. The chemical constituents of Eleutherococcus senticosus consists of 16 eleutherosides, 6 senticosides, isofraxidin, vitamin C, sucrose, Beta carotene, glucose, an unidentified polysaccharide, an essential oil, vitamin E and traces of copper.

ASTRAGALUS membranaceous, is one of the most popular tonic herbs used in the Orient. In studies performed at the National Cancer Institute, it has been positively shown that Astragalus strengthens a cancer patient's immune system. Researchers believed, on the basis of cell studies, that Astragalus augments those white blood cells that fight disease, such as leukocytes, T-cells, lymphocytes, and removes some of those cells that make the body more susceptible to disease. It is evident that nothing in Astragalus directly attacks cancer cells themselves, but instead fortifies the body's own immune system. Astragalus has been found to be a "response modifier" which favorably modulates the subnormal immune apparatus of cancer patients. Chinese researchers conducting parallel research, have found that astragalus enabled mice to resist highly infectious viruses and to produce larger amounts of interferon, a vital cellular protein that inhibits viral growth. Astragalus contains a number of active ingredients including glycosides, choline, betaine, linoleic acid, Linolenic acid, isoamnitine and kumatakenin.

LIGUSTRUM lucidum, has been found to contain an extremely powerful immune system stimulant. It has, in this respect, properties identical to those found in Astragalus membranaceous. Extensive research performed by the Cancer Institute of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Peking, lends further support to the concept that extracts of these herbs may indeed act as biological response modifiers due to the presence of one or more extremely potent, naturally occurring immune stimulants.

GLYCYRRHIZAE uralensis, or Chinese licorice Root, stands next to ginseng in importance in Chinese herbalism. It is the most widely used of all Chinese Herbs. In pharmaceutical tests it has been found that glycyrrhizin, an active component of licorice root, has a function similar to that of the adrenal cortical hormones. Compounds isolated from this have been known to exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-tussive activity. Glycyrrhiza uralensis contains glycyrrhizin (6-14%), glycyrramarin, liquiritin, and other flavonoids, mannitol, glucose, sucrose and starch, etc.
